Advent Wake

The motions, the movement, the mystery
Our lullaby
We wait now in hushed tones, we’re standing here
As time ticks by
And all while a rooster crows, a dove mourns,
Our babies cry
We quote Psalms of “how long?” but few will dare
To question “why?”

Comfort, brother, sister, comfort
All’s well and good we say
But I am broken, shedding tears
My heart forgetting how to pray

We say God works beyond our finite ways
Worthy of trust
Life goes backward while we are standing still
A cruel twist
We rage to be rescued from helplessness
A catalyst
And all while we’re called to be unified
How they insist!

Comfort, brother, sister, comfort
All’s well and good they say
But I’m still broken, shedding tears
And this is how I choose to pray
